Tibetan Refugee Settlements in Nepal:
List of Tibetan Settlements in Nepal and their livelihood:
During 1959, 1960 and 1961 as many as 20,000 refugees arrived in Nepal, most of these Tibetan refugees who came to Nepal from the border areas of western Tibet. Many of them were able to bring along some belongings, including sheep, goats, yak etc. which enabled them to eke out their living during the years immediately following their arrival in Nepal. Many among them eventually made their way to India, where they were either settled on the agricultural settlements and handicrafts centers or sent to work on the road work camps. However during the later year of 1961, the Government of India placed severe restrictions on the entry of Tibetan refugees from Nepal because of the Sino-Indian conflict along the Indo-Tibetan border.
With the generous and kind help of the International Committee for the Red Cross, Royal Government of Nepal, Swiss Government, Services for Technical Co-operation Switzerland, Australian Refugees Committee and other voluntary associations seven refugees settlement were established in various parts of Nepal. All these settlements have been able to absorb about 2,400 of the 8,000 refugees in the country. At present there are 10 settlements in Nepal.
