A brief story on Tibetan Refugee Self-Help Handicraft Center, Darjeeling.

Introduction:

In the year 1959 Mr. Gyalo Thondup with fund raised through locally charity shows, football matches etc has started this center and registered as charitable organization under the act of Government of India. At the begining there were just four workers. Today the center is home for 130 tibetan family. Over the year the center has undertaken multifarious activities ranging from the production of handicrafts,training of artisans, and craftsmen to the care of the sick, elders and needy destitute.

Location:

Tibetan Refugees Self Help Center is located at hillside Lebong in Darjeeling District of West Bengal at average altitude of approximately2143m (7000 ft.) above sea level. The temperature ranges between 17° Celsius-1.5° Celsius, with an average rainfall of 320 Cms annually.

Livelihood:

The main source of livelihood is base on weaving traditional tibetan carpet and many other hand made articles.

Administrative setup:

The center has board members for the administration. All the important decision were taken through board members.
