A brief story of Sakya Tibetan Society, Puruwala, H.P.
Introduction:
This settlement was established in the year 1969 mainly as an agro Industrial settlement. The settlement has been provided with a total land allotment of 112 acres out of which 92 acres have been converted into agricultural land and remaining 20 acres have been used for housing to accommodate a total household of 137 in the settlement.The settlement is managed by a society called the Sakya Tibetan Society, registered under the Societies Registration Act of 1860 Government of India.
Settlement location:
Sakya Tibetan Society settlement is situated at Puruwala.It is around 10 km from the Paonta Sahib town of Sirmour District in Hamachal Pradesh State. The settlement is at the altitude of 2500 meter from sea level. The average rainfall is 907 millimeter and the average temperature is 10°-43° celsius.

Settler's livelihood:
Agriculture is the main source of livelihood for the settlers. Besides agriculture, the settlement has a handicraft center which provides employment for the settlers to augment their meager income from land, many settlers go out of the settlement to do seasonal petty woollen business.

Administrative setup:
CTA Representative
Tibetan settlement officer at Pururwala is the sole representative office
of Department of Home, Central Tibetan Administration in the settlement.
It is serving as the liaison between the Tibetans in the region and the
Department of Home, Central Tibetan Administration. The settlement office
is the principle office to look after welfare and overall control of running
affairs of Tibetans in the settlement under the policy and guidence of CTA.
Daily task for the representative ranges from adjudicating disputes to
communicating with Local Assembly and outside authorities, generally
watching over the running of all aspects of the settlement.
Local Assembly
Like every other genuine democratic set up of settlements, the Puruwala
settlement also elect their own representative for better understanding
of the problems with them. The actual term of the Local Assembly is five years
and these members hold session twice in a year with settlement officer.
During the session they can bring up the problems of settlers and raises
the question on the working of the Tibetan settlement Officer. These
members are elected on the basis of their strength of personality and
once ability to stand before the interest of their people.
