Press Statement from Bodh Gaya

29 January, 2002

BODH GAYA, January 28, 2002 -- There are rumours that they had been several bomb blasts in Bodh Gaya, and that disgruntled elements within the local population are staging a massive protest demonstration against the holding of the Kalachakra teachings.

This is patently false. The atmosphere in Bodh Gaya is peaceful and the people are going about their spiritual practice. In fact, there was a palpable sense of relieve when it was announced through the TYC Information Centre that the doctors of Leelawati Hospital in Mumbai pronounce His Holiness the Dalai Lama in a good health.

When, on 24th January, His Holiness announced to the public that he was not able to conduct the Kalachakra teachings, the public gathered at the Kalachakra teaching ground and prayed for his good health from 9:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. next morning. This marathon prayer session was presided over by Jangtse Choje Rinpoche. Next evening, a shorter version was repeated.

At its height, the currently postponed Kalachakra teachings attracted about more than 200,000 people. Now a half has already left. The rest will leave within the next couple of days.

His Holiness promised that he would conduct the Kalachakra teachings around the same time next year in Bodh Gaya.
