Booklet on Trulku Released

Dharamsala 27 October: With TrulkuTenzin Delek’s reprieved death sentence nearing its expiry, campaigns by various non-governmental organisations for his release have been on the high. The Dharamsala based Tibetan Centre for Human Rigts and Democracy has launched an eight-page booklet called Save Trulku Tenzin Delek.

The booklet which is available in English and Tibetan chronicles Trulku’s rise to popularity due to his philanthropic works, his arbitrary arrest on false charges and sentencing to death

In a press release issued by the center at the launch of the booklet, the center has reiterated its belief that the popular religious figure of eastern Tibet is innocent and was wrongly framed forcrimes he has not committed.

"In the light of all evidences TCHRD has received, the centre strongly believes that Trulku Tenzin Delek is innocent and deserves to be freed from execution, life imprisonment and prison term."

There is, however, certain optimism among the Tibetan people as the Chinese Foreign ministry informed its German counterpart in February this year about the possibility of Trulku’s capital punishment being commuted to life imprisonment as per article 51 of China’s criminal law. China also revealed Trulku’s location at Choundong Prison in Dazu district in eastern Tibet, now incorporated into Sichuan province.

China has earlier displayed some goodwill gestures by releasing some eminent political prisoners, the latest being Geshe Sonam Phunstok who was released a few days ago. And with His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s envoys managing to engage in discussions in ‘frank but cordial atmosphere’, Trulku’s release or at least commuting of his death sentence to life imprisonment may add another feather in the ties between Beijing and Dharamsala.
