A Former Political Prisoner Passes Away

Dharamsala, 3 October 2003: In a sad incident, Nyima Drakpa, a former Tibetan political prisoner passed away Friday afternoon at his home in Tawu County, Karze TAP. According to reliable sources, Nyima was imprisoned in October 2000 on arbitrary charges of "hindering welfare of the country" and his death is a direct result of prison tortures and injuries sustained during his imprisonment.

A former monk of Nyatso monastery in Tawu, Nyima joined the Gaden monastery in south India after his flight to India in 1990. Nyima returned to Tibet in 1994 to rejoin his old monastery in Tawu County.

After his return to Tibet, he pasted pro-independence posters on the offices of the local authorities and in some posters he even wrote his name. This led to his arrest but was released soon after.

He fled his native village to hide in a village near Lhasa but got arrested in the beginning of year 2000 from Lhasa.

He was sentenced to nine years' imprisonment by a court in Tawu County.

A candle light vigil to mourn his death will be carried out later today here in Dharamsala by the local Tibetans and supporters.
