Federation of Tibetan Co-operatives in India Ltd.
[ Reforming & strengthening of the Co-operative Institutions ]
In 1959, His Holiness the Dalai Lama and several thousands of Tibetan refugees were granted asylum in India and many rehabilitation settlements were set up by the government of India to host the Tibetan refugees. The solace and support the people and the government of India had given to the Tibetan refugees in the hour of acute need and also the infrastructure provided to set up rehabilitation settlements where Tibetan people can practice and sustain their culture and religious traditions, are held with profound indebtedness by the Tibetan people in and outside of Tibet.
Simultaneously with the setting up of settlements, co-operative societies were also duly registered, under the different state co-operative societies Act, in all the rehabilitation settlements to function as the backbone of the economic life of the settlements.
Today, we can vouch in all our humility and modesty the fact that Tibetan cooperative societies are among the best co-operatives in their respective areas. Nevertheless, given the potential of activities the co-operatives can undertake to serve their members in a larger perspective, the need to bring the Tibetan co-operatives functioning in several states of India under one apex body in the form of a federation is deemed both timely and indispensable. Therefore, all the 15 Tibetan Co-operative Societies in 9 different states had unanimously resolved to set up a Federation of the Tibetan co-operative societies (in India) Ltd. for exporting the products and manufactures by these member co-operative societies.
Therefore, under guidance from the Central Tibetan Administration, on 20th April 2005 Federation of Tibetan Co-operatives in India Ltd. has been formerly registered under Multi-State Co-operative Societies Act 2002.
